Based on the language medium that used, the transliteration is categorized into two types, those are translation and interpretation. But, what the definition of transliteration? A lot of definitions about transliteration explained by expertise. Catford, in case, defines as “a process of substituting a text in one languague for a text in another” (1965). Meanwhile, Newmark defines as “a process of transfer meaning from one language to another in accordance with the idea intended by the author to the original text” (1988). Beside the definitions, transliteration is regarded as a process of communication. “In this process, information transfer, from the information expressed in a language transfer into information in another language” (Pinchuk 1977).
Translation is a transfer language into another language. BSu text in written language transfer into the text of BSa which is also in written language. most of the translator activities have done so long in a translation in this category. Meanwhile, interpretation is a transfer language in verbal medium. Implemented into two forms, which are verbal interpretation or consecutive and simultaneous. In addition from those two types, there is one more type transfer, that is screen translation or could called subtitling. Mostly used in the work of input verbal language of characters in films, dramas, or another presentation in the monitor screen.
But in Bahasa Indonesia, those three different types of transliteration is called in the same term of the word, “translation”. the worker of those activities is also different; translator, interpreter, and subtitler. In Indonesia, just called translator. The difference is just on the next term of the word, whether verbal or written. And, finally the common different types of transliteration consists of: translation, interpretation (consecutive and simultaneous), and subtitling or screen translation.
